iv) Function and duties:

The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) is a premier research Institute on freshwater aquaculture in the country under the aegeis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. The present Institute has had its beginnings in the Pond Culture Division of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) established at Cuttack, Orissa in 1949 with a view to face challenges in the field of fish culture in ponds, tanks and other small aquatic body. Subsequently, CIFRI, in a major effort to give emphasis to freshwater aquaculture research, initiated steps to establish the Freshwater Aquaculture Research and Training Centre (FARTC) over 147 ha campus at Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar, Orissa. The Centre gradually developed into its full capacity and became an independent Institute during 1987 as Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA). The Institute is also the Lead Centre on ‘Carp Farming in India’ under Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) operative under Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nation (FAO). The Headquarters of the Institute is located at Bhubaneswar, Odisha and One Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha in its Campus. The Institute has Four Research Centre at Rahara, Kolkata & Field Station Kalyani, W. B, Vijayawada, A.P, Hessaraghatta Lake, Bengaluru and Bathinda, in Punjab.

The institute functions with the following mandate:

  • Basic and strategic research for the development of sustainable culture systems for freshwater finfish and shellfish
  • Species and systems diversification in freshwater aquaculture
  • Human Resource Development through training, education and extension

Administration

The Director with whom all the administrative and financial powers of the institute are vested Heads the Institute/Head of Department. One Chief Administrative Officer and Six Asst. Administrative Officers assist him in matters relating to general administration. One Finance & Accounts Officer and Eighteen Assistants, Six Upper Divisional Clerk and Six Lower Divisional Clerk look after the administrative and financial aspects and also the internal audit of the Institute. Twenty-Three technical Staff attends to the technical matters including those connected with research projects handled by the Institute.

The research work at ICAR-CIFA is carried by the following Research Divisions/Section:-
